Honored to be Part of the Military City USA Region.

Bulverde/Spring Branch is part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) which has one of the nation’s largest active and retired military populations, many of whom call Bulverde/Spring Branch home or visit our area often for its recreational amenities. In fact, there is a military only recreation area located on the north side of Canyon Lake in Comal County just a few miles northeast of Bulverde/Spring Branch just off FM 306.

In addition, Smithson Valley High School located within Bulverde/Spring Branch is helping to provide the best of the best canidates for a future military career. In fact, Smithson Valley High School’s Navy JROTC Unit has been named the top program in the United States for the 2016-2017 school year by the Commander, Naval Service Training Command. The Navy League’s Best in the Nation award is the most prestigious honor a Navy JROTC Unit can receive.

There are four military installations in the MSA, all are part of Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA):

Randolph AFB – Headquarters for Air Education and Training Command and the Air Force Military Personnel Center. Randolph AFB is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Bulverde/Spring Branch.

Fort Sam Houston (Army) – Home of the Department of Defense’s largest medical center to include Brooke Army Medical Center (the leading treatment center for burn victims in the military), Institute of Surgical Research, and Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute. Fort Sam Houston is located about 30 miles south of Bulverde/Spring Branch.

Lackland Air Force Base – Air Force Basic Training (over 38,000 students graduate from military training each year) and headquarters for Air Force Intelligence Agency. Lackland AFB is located nearly 40 miles southwest of Bulverde/Spring Branch.

Camp Bullis – Provides Base Operations Support and Training Support to JBSA and is located just 22 miles southwest of Bulverde/Spring Branch. Camp Bullis is used primarily as maneuvering grounds for U.S. Army, Air Force and Marines combat units. It is also utilized as a field training site for the various medical units stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center in nearby Fort Sam Houston.

Additionally there is Camp Stanley, formerly known as Camp Funston, a U. S. Army facility that operates the “Camp Stanley Storage Activity” (CSSA) as an ammunitions depot subpost of the San Antonio Arsenal and is located approximately 22 miles southwest of Bulverde/Spring Branch. The primary missions of the “Camp Stanley Storage Activity” (CSSA) have been receipt, storage, and issuance of ordnance material; and quality assurance testing of military weapons and ammunition. The secondary mission of the CSSA is weapons training and qualifying. Camp Stanley is adjacent to Camp Bullis and together they make up the Leon Springs Military Reservation, located north of San Antonio near Fair Oaks Ranch.

Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) estimated contribution to the local and Texas economy is substantial. In 2015, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and JBSA registered an impact estimated at $48.7 billion overall. In fact, JBSA contributes 65% of Texas’ total military GDP and generates an annual disposable personal income of approximately $17 billion.
